Job Vacancy – Legal Adviser at Geneva Call

Geneva CallGeneva Call is recruiting a legal adviser to support their projects relating to international humanitarian law and international human rights law. The deadline for applications is 30th April 2014 and the preferred start date is 1 June 2014.

The legal adviser will be based at Geneva Call’s office in Geneva but will be expected to travel frequently to target countries and their responsibilities will be as follows:-

  • Contribute to, and support, the implementation of Geneva Call’s IHL/IHRL related projects in target countries;
  • Provide legal support and advice on IHL/IHRL related issues;
  • Deliver training on IHL/IHRL to target audiences;
  • Build capacity of Geneva Call’s staff and partners on IHL/IHRL;
  • Manage Geneva Call’s IHL/IHRL trainer consultant pool;
  • Develop IHL/IHRL related training material;
  • Conduct relevant legal research;
  • Liaise with relevant partners, donors and other stakeholders;
  • Follow up and participate in, where appropriate, relevant international legal processes;
  • Lead or assist in project design and management, monitoring and evaluation, including the preparation of proposals and reports as well as the identification of partners;
  • Support global advocacy and fundraising efforts;
  • Provide other programme or project-related support, including administrative support as required;
  • Perform other duties as required;
  • Record and archive material related to his/her responsibilities and activities.

Geneva Call are looking for the following qualifications for the post:

  • Advanced university degree in international law, with specialization in IHL and IHRL; knowledge of Islamic Law would be an asset;
  • At least 5 years of work experience in protection issues, preferably in IHL and IHLR issues, including a minimum of 2 years field experience; military background would be an asset;
  • Sound working knowledge of IHL/IHRL and relevant protection frameworks, in particular on gender protection;
  • Proven experience and capacity in advocacy, training, capacity-building, project design and management;
  • Experience in working with armed non-State actors;
  • Ability to analyze information, to evaluate options and to plan strategically;
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, organization and presentation skills;
  • Proficiency in English and in French (both oral and written); Spanish and/or Arabic will be an asset
  • Capacity to work independently and with minimum supervision, and as a part of a multicultural team;
  • Capacity to work under pressure and to handle multiple tasks simultaneously;
  • Willingness to travel frequently to high risk locations, including conflict areas;
  • Demonstrable computer literacy.
